2. Diet & Hydration
Even when your cat is healthy, it’s important to pay attention to diet and hydration.
✔ Diet Tips
- Feed age-appropriate formulas such as indoor or senior diets.
- At this stage, a renal prescription diet is not strictly required.
- Limit treats or avoid them when possible.
✔ Hydration Tips
- Add about 30 ml (≈1 fl oz) of water to wet food or liquid treats two to three times per day.
- Place multiple water bowls around the house and replace the water daily.
3. Routine Checkpoints
Schedule a basic health check at least once a year.
✔ Every 12 months
- Schedule wellness exams with blood tests (Creatinine and BUN).
- Include an abdominal X-ray under veterinary guidance.
4. Emergency Signs
Seek veterinary attention if you notice:
- Reduced appetite or water intake
- Noticeable weight loss without diet change
Reference
According to the IRIS Guidelines, Stage 1 is the earliest phase of kidney change.
At this stage, kidney function is mostly normal (about 66% or more remaining).
Creatinine is usually below 1.6 mg/dL, and BUN is typically within 15–30 mg/dL.
Values may vary depending on individual health status and laboratory standards.
