When Mickey was diagnosed with early-stage CKD, I felt both surprised and anxious. He’s still young, and I didn’t expect kidney issues so soon. But with patience and the right care, he’s shown encouraging progress that makes me truly hopeful for his future.
Starting the Routine
We began the Dr. Toru Protocol, followed by the Intensive Protocol after a consultation. After two months of consistent care, his creatinine dropped from 2.6 to 1.8, BUN from 26 to 22, and SDMA remained within reference levels.
Alongside the supplements, I adjusted his diet — lowering phosphorus, adding pumpkin for extra moisture, and giving salmon oil for skin and coat support. He also takes a whole-food renal tablet (Feline Renal Support by Standard Process) and a sprouted-seed supplement (Flora4 by Carna4 Pet Food) to provide natural vitamins and taurine.

What I Felt as a Guardian
Before this, I believed moisture in food was the single most important factor for kidney health. Now I understand that phosphorus and protein management are equally vital. I also realized that patience matters more than perfection — improvement comes from steady, thoughtful care.
Seeing Mickey active, shiny-coated, and playful again makes every bit of effort worthwhile. Even his sister, whose values were better, is now on a basic maintenance routine to keep her kidneys healthy.
